The Department was established in the year 1989 under the pioneering leadership of principal late Dr. G. Y. Pathrikar till 2002, then the responsibilities was shouldered to Dr. S. R. Vaidya.
In the begiining the department tought under graduate courses. The master's programme was introduced in 2007 by considering demand and need of skilled individuals in the field of chemistry. The department is recognised as research centre by Dr. B. A. M. University Aurangabad since 2018.
